As Director of Community Partnerships & Family Supports and a mom with a teen on the spectrum, the holidays are an extra busy time for me, for all of us really. I’m always in search of shortcuts without compromising the spirit of the holiday season. While finding the perfect present for a loved one can often be challenging, shopping for a child on the spectrum adds an additional layer of complexity.
Recently a Chicago-based store named Spectrum made national news for being one of the only toy stores in the country that caters to children with developmental disabilities. They offer a variety of toys, sensory items, children’s books as well as resources for caregivers and educators. How cool is that? Since a shopping trip to Chicago may not be in the cards, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite online retailers that have great option for that special child on your list:
- Fat Brain Toys
- Amazon: Gifts for Children with Autism
- Fun and Function
- Marbles the Brain Store
- National Autism Resources has great ideas for the teenager on your list
All of us here at the DFJFA want to thank you for your incredible support over this past year. We are so grateful for the wonderful families and organizations we have the opportunity to serve – you truly are our gift. Warm wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!
All my best,
