Have you been to the mall lately? They’re already unpacking and putting up holiday décor! It’s only October! But people are already starting to think about their holiday shopping, and we think October is a special time to do so as we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness month.
You may have already heard of our adult employment social enterprise, Flutie Spectrum Enterprises, which currently employs seven hardworking adults across the autism spectrum in our Office Solutions microbusiness, offering mailing, assembly, shredding, and other services. Earlier this year, FSE collaborated with Flutie Foundation grant recipient Tech Kids Unlimited to create Shop the Spectrum, an online directory of businesses employing adults with autism who have products available for sale online. TKU offers a wide array of technology-based classes, from video editing and coding to website and game creation, to kids and teens who learn differently.
Shop the Spectrum is a space where people can find high quality products and treasured gifts all supporting employment for those on the autism spectrum and with other disabilities. The site currently has five categories of products: Apparel & Jewelry, Art & Prints, Digital Services, Food & Beverages, and Home & Living to help you find exactly what you’re looking for.
Now doesn’t that bring a smile to your face? Then you should consider sending some SMILE Biscotti, which are packaged with handwritten thank you notes—these were a hit in our office! Or do you or your business need some custom apparel or promotional items? Then Spectrum Designs is your place to go! What about those scents that fill the air, warming us up as the months get colder: hot apple cider, sweet potato pie, candy canes, and pine trees? Extraordinary Ventures’ Gifts line has candles in all those scents and many more, including other products like soaps and lip balms. And of course we can’t forget our favorite family members to spoil: those furry members of the family who would love to rip open some Good Reasons dog treats!
When you’re having trouble finding that perfect gift for a special someone, remember to Shop the Spectrum and find something distinct and impactful that will be treasured for a long time to come (or at least for however long you can make some of the edible treats last!).
Eligible businesses can submit the vendor form on the Shop the Spectrum homepage to be considered for addition to the website (must employ adults with autism and have products available for sale online that can be shipped nationally).
Happy Shopping!
